The South African Council for Automation and Control presents an evening talk by Prof David Limebeer on the topic of Optimal Control in F1 Racing.
The talk will focus on the optimal control of the hybrid kinetic-thermal energy recovery systems known as (ERS-K) and (ERS-H) that were introduced into Formula One racing for the 2014 season. Optimal control can be used to optimise the driver controls such as the steering, braking and throttle usage, optimise vehicle setup such as the aerodynamic downforce distributions and the engine maps, and also optimise the management of the tyres.
Of particular interest is the optimal usage of on-board energy recovery systems. It will be demonstrated that the hybrid power train, when properly controlled, can produce 2013 lap times using approximately two thirds of the fuel required by legacy (2013 and earlier) vehicles. These results are potentially significant in the context of future road cars.

David J. N. Limebeer took up the University Chair in Control Engineering, in the Department of Engineering Science, at the University of Oxford, UK in 2009. He is a Professorial Fellow in New College, Oxford. His research interests include robust and optimal control, the modelling and control of mechanical systems including air and road vehicles, and large civil engineering structures. Prior to moving to Oxford, he was head of the Control Group at Imperial College (1995 – 1999), and Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (1999 – 2009. He was chairman of the Imperial College Engineering Faculty Research Committee between 2002 and 2005. He was elected Fellow of the IEEE in 1992, Fellow of the IEE in 1994, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1997 and Fellow of the City and Guilds Institute in 2002.
Who Should Attend
This talk is open to all control engineers and anyone interested in optimal control methods and techniques. The talk will not require in-depth control theory knowledge.
